To Our Beloved Brother Kelvin (1977-2006)

Kelvin was called back to be with the Lord on Friday, 13 January 2006.

Kelvin was an amazing person to me. He was like a mentor and a big brother and a friend to me too. I first knew Kelvin during a WOW camp at year 2000. At that time, I remembered that he actually when up to our camp speaker, Jacob to pray for him. And there, his faith for God really grew tremendously.During the beginning of 2001, he was my DG leaders and if I did remembered correctly, he was co-leading with Wee Teck. At that time, I was in Secondary 3. Since then, we really grow very close to each other. Our DG group at that time (Keith, Terence, Wen Jie, Jonathan, Paul, Elizabeth, Sarah, Charlotte, Janice, Joy, Annette, Fiona and I) will always go out for breakfast, lunch, sometimes have dinner together, go for movies, swimming at my place and also had many barbecues together. I remembered we went to each others house for Chinese New Year at 2002. Kelvin really showed cared and concern for us. He will tell us to constantly read the bible, pray to God if we were in times of trouble, never to give up on GOD and even encouraged our DG group to serve in WOW. I remembered him actually when up to give a sermon topic on true friendship about David and Jonathan. That really taught me a lot what true friendship is all about.

In early 2003, Kelvin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I was shocked when he told everyone in our DG class and also the whole WOW. At that time, the doctors were saying that he had only 6 months to live. But by the grace of God, he actually lived on for 3 years. Can you imagine that a cancer patient can live up to 3 years? That really shows that God grace was with him.During his 3 years of cancer, he never blames God for his illness at all. On top of that, he said that he wants to be a living testimony for Christ. He shared with us that he gave his testimony at St. Francis Methodist School, to cancer wards and even that, he made countless friends from all over just so that he could share the Good News with them. Also, when the chairperson invites people up to the stage to share during WOW service, he will always be the first one to be there and he will start to talk about the grace that he is able to live on.

During his first stage and second stage of cancer, he did a lot of crazy things. I remembered that he actually played soccer, basketball, went up to a haunted place near my house, having barbecues with our DG group. On top of that, he even took part in the CAC Captain's Ball Tournament too. That was Saturday, 16th July 2005. Who else can do that? Well, Kelvin is a person that always overcomes the odds. He has a lot of zest and showed no sign of giving up, even when sharing the Gospel with many of his friends. I remembered him telling me once that he actually Jet ski near a vessel in Puket, Thailand. I remember his favorite pastime; taking picture using his $2000 camera. He takes a lot of beautiful artistic picture and pastes it in his room and also in his PC. I remember he actually took a picture with Terrence Cao.

However, in late 2005, Kelvin condition was getting from bad to worse after his trip to New York, USA. At that time, I remembered that the cancer cells have already spread to his liver and he had to go for numerous operations at that time. The last time I saw him was like the 3rd week of November 2005. I was shock that he was so skinny that you can see his bones. He remindered me of this book that I read called “Black Hawk Down”. He really looked like those people from Somalia where they are all in bones. That really shocked me to see him in this condition. Then on Friday, 13th of January 2006, I was watching a movie when I received a called from Keith. He told me that Kelvin might not be able to make it and that everyone was rushing to his place. My parents drove me to his place and ran as fast as I could over to his house. By the time I arrived, he had passed away. If I were to be there before 1915hrs to see him having his last final breathe. As I stood near his bed, I was numb. I was simply too shocked to react to reality that Kelvin passed on.

I attended Kelvin's wake both Saturday and Sunday and I was so surprised to see a lot of people that the Hall was fully packed. As I see his picture on top of his coffin, tears just flow out from my eyes. I really cry out as I really lost someone that I looked up upon. Even though it was sad to see my friend died but in my heart, I was happy that he is already in heaven waiting for us to rejoice with the Lord together.

His cremation was on Monday and I took time of from school to pay my final respect. I was trying hard to control my tears but I couldn't. As his coffin was wheeled into the furnace, I began to cry. At that point of time, I just could not believe that he actually left this world. But it took sometime for me to think that he is already in heaven praising God in heaven.

I guessed that everyone learn something about Kelvin. And these are the things that I learned from him. The first thing that I learn is that he served the Lord wholeheartedly. If you had noticed the way he played the drums for the Lord, he played it with his whole loving heart. He always reminded me to serve the Lord with all out heart, with all our souls and all our strength. Secondly is that he never complains about his illness and suffering. Instead, he rejoices so as to share with other people what God really meant to him even in times of pain and suffering. Thirdly, he always shares his stuff with his friends. If you are really closed with him, he always shares his food with us and on top of that, he even ordered more food for us. Next, he will always encourage everyone to share the word of God to our friends. He always stressed the importance of salvation. And lastly, he show what faith really meant and also that reminded me that God grace is always sufficient for me always.

Thought his action and words, he really lives a victorious Christian life. As I sat on my chair to think, I believe God is now saying this to him. "Kelvin, you are a good and faithful servant to me. You are now safe in my arms”. Also I was picturing him playing the drum set in front of God passionately. Praising him for what he has done for him during his 28 years of his live. I will always miss this crazy, energetic and happy laughter that Kelvin has shown our DG group and me too. I salute you for been a true Christian soldier.

I will see you soon in heaven.
